Default OC Crafting FAQ

Crafting FAQ

Please read the following section and refer to our OC crafting guide section first before posting in the recipes Q&A thread

Note: For information related to the MOTB crafting system, check here .

-------------------

q1. I'm using 1.03(840) english version and when I tried to craft a "permanent haste" full plate mail, the armor gained the delayed blast fireball spell, What did I do wrong?

a1. Nothing. It's a known bug, but will likely be fixed along with one or two others. For a list of known bugs, see here:

-------------------

q2. What happened to the permanent haste items?

a2. They have been removed permanently (as of the 1.03 patch). Permahaste has been replaced with "Haste, 3x/day". Any items remaining after the 1.03 patch will be removed in patch 1.04.

-------------------

q3. I can craft bows, but I can't add a base enchantment to them. What am I doing wrong?

a3. Nothing. It's a gap in the crafting system, and it is not likely to be fixed. Here's the problem: Adding a base enchantment to a melee weapon increases both your AB and your damage, so a +5 dagger does +5 damage and increases your AB by +5, and the recipes for weapon enchantment were designed to do exactly that. However, a +5 long bow only increases your AB by +5 and NOT your damage; damage adjustments come with the arrows. So the code that the designers used to implement the base enchantments for melee weapons CAN'T be used for ranged weapons because it would add +5 to both AB and damage, and that's not how it should work. It's still open to debate as to whether an AC deflection bonus can be added to a bow or not. See here

------------------

q4. Do caster levels of different spell casting classes combine?

a4. In most cases, no. Characters with multiple spell casting classes determine their caster level based on the class which is casting the spell. (A wizard 8, cleric 12 casting a fireball would have a Caster level of 8) Eldritch Knights DO add their levels to their highest arcane level to determine caster level.

----------------

q5. Does the person crafting the base weapon or armor also have to cast the spell on it to enchant it?

a5. No. Crafting a base item and enchanting it are two separate steps for armor (including shields) and weapons. See here

----------------

q6. I can't find any books with recipes for essences. Where are they?

a6. They don't exist. Essences are *distillled* from monsters pieces/parts using the mortar and pestle and the craft alchemy skill. For a complete list see here:

------------------

q7. I'm a level 16 ranger. I tried crafting an item which has a requirement of level 14 caster, but the game keeps telling me that my level is not high enough.

a7. Ranger and Paladins cast spells at a level equal to half of their class level. A 16th level ranger has an effective caster level of 8.

-------------------

q8. Can we change the name, description or appearance of items that we craft in the game?

a8. Yes, no and no. The item name can be changed - a dialogue box will open and let you alter the item name. The basic description will be altered for you to reflect the enchantments you've added, but none of the history can be changed. You can not alter the appearance without using the toolset.

-------------------

q9. How many enhancements can I put on a weapon? or a suit of armor? or a shield?

a9. You can have a maximum of three enchantments on a weapon, shield or suit or armor. That also includes special properties added from exotic materials like adamantine or darksteel for example. Existing enchantments count against the enchantment limit. Once created, Wondrous Items can not be further enchanted in the OC. For more details, look here

--------------------

q10. I found a really nice sword in the game and I want to upgrade its base +1 enhancement. The game says it's not a base item. What does that mean?

a10. See q9. Chances are the sword already has 3 enhancements on it. If you only see two apparent enhancements, check the metal type as well.

---------------------

q11. Does the order in which I add or upgrade enchantments matter?

a11. Yes and no. No, if you're enchanting an item totally from scratch. Yes, if you plan on upgrading an enchantment later, or if you're adding enchantments to an already enchanted item. e.g. If you have a +1 longsword of wounding, and want to upgrade its +1 base enchantment to +5 and add 1d6 fire damage, do the upgrade to +5 first and then add the fire damage. If you do the fire damage first, the item will have its alloted 3 enchantments and the game will reject any further attempts to upgrade the weapon.

----------------------

q12. I'm a level 16 wizard and am trying to enchant an item that requires a caster level of 15 using a spell that I have memorized. I have the right gem and the right essence and everything else matches but the recipe game tells me I'm not high enough caster level. What's wrong?

a12. I believe that's a bug in some earlier game versions. Instead of checking to see if your caster level was >= the required CL, the game was checking to see that your caster level was = the required CL. Patching to the latest version 1.03(840) should solve the problem.

-------------------

q13. I'm trying to craft an adamantine long sword. The mold says I need a crafting skill of 5 and my crafting skill is 13. The crafting attempt fails. Why?

a13. Crafting items using exotic materials increases the level of crafting skill necessary. Crafting an adamantine longsword requires a crafting skill of 20; 5 for sword and +15 for the metal. For a complete list see here:

---------------------

q14. Where can I find crafting materials?

a14. Item molds and wooden planks are only sold at certain merchants throughout the game. Gems are usually found as random treasure, but can be bought from a few, but not all, of the merchants. Regular leather hides, and the very occassional rare hide, are usually dropped by monsters (e.g. wolves, hellhounds), but special hides are available only at a select group of merchants. Metal ingots are available at every merchant, but some of them have exceptionally large inventories. Essences can usually only be distilled from monster body parts but occasionally they are dropped in their distilled state. A list of the monster body parts can be found here

----------------------

q15. Where do I find recipes to craft items? Do I need recipes to craft items?

a15. *Recipes* for crafting non-magical items are usually found in the item mold descriptions. Recipes for the creation of magical items are found in Tomes scattered throughout the game. The magical item recipes are simply instructions for item creation and are not actually consumed in the item creation process. For an extensive list of magical item recipes; check here:

----------------------

q16. I tried to craft a cold iron Morningstar without luck. I followed the mold instructions; put two cold iron ingots into the blacksmith's bench, put the mold in as well and had my crafter with a crafting skill of 18 use the smithing hammer on the bench. Game said: "This is not a valid recipe". What's wrong?

a16. The mold description is in error. Use a single ingot for a morningstar. The "This is not a valid recipe" error message usually means that you do not have the proper components or are using the wrong workbench.

-----------------------

q17. I made a full plate at blacksmith's bench. I put it in magician's bench with blue diamond, glowing air and power essences and cast light on it. The full plate doesn't have any enchancements on it. Yet I get the "no base armor or weapon to be enchanted found" message. What's wrong?

a17. Make sure of the following: (a) that you have all of the required ingredients in the work bench and ONLY those, (b) that you are using the proper bench, (c) that the recipe you are using is accurate and (d) that the "base item" you are using still has room for a further enchantment (limit of 3). There are a number of recipes listed on various sites that are incorrect - especially with respect to the essences required.

-----------------------

q18. Is it possible to add sonic damage to a weapon?

a18. Not at the present time, but it may be added with updates from the expansion.

-----------------------

q19. I'm doing everything right but I still can't get crafting to work, what gives?

a19. Make sure you are fully patched, remove any third party content from your override folder and remove a no-cd crack if you are running one. The no-cd cracks that are available are causing problems for numerous users and not just with crafting.
