View Full Version : Alignments
If you should have any questions regarding alignments while you're rolling up your next character concept, first try to read our comprehensive Alignment section on your left. If that doesn't answer your question, feel free to post it here.
To change your alignment in game:
enter cheat mode with ##DebugMode 1
at the console, enter:
rs ga_alignment(1,1)
to move one point towards Law
rs ga_alignment(-1,1)
to move one point towards Chaos
rs ga_alignment(1,0)
to move one point towards good
rs ga_alignment(-1,0)
to move one point towards evil
the first number in the parenthesis can changed to a 1, 2, 3 or 4 (positive or negative). a 2 or -2 will move you 3 points...a 3 or -3 will move you 10 points...and a 4 or -4 will move to 70 points.
so if you're Lawful Good and want to be Chaotic Evil...
rs ga_alignment(-4,0)
rs ga_alignment(-4,1)

Having played KOTR I and II and NWN, I remember in both of those games being able to see what numerical values your alignment it currently at (or at least a slider). However in NWN2 although I get reports on how my alignment shifts, I have not seen where my alignment is in total value. Is there a way or a place to see that?

I would think that it would be more "realistic" not to know what the exact numerical number of your alignment is. It would be like someone who claims to be a Christian knowing exactly where he stood with God and whether or not he would make it to heaven.
Your decisions determine what you are... and that's how it should be... it wouldn't be fun knowing that if you selected #2 instead of #1, your evil rating would have increased more or less... and then reloading the game just so that you could get the alignment you want...
Ah well, just my opinion on that... that's just what my preference would be...
never thought about that this way. you have a point though ...

And i agree, it should be your actions, not just in talking but also if you attack, steal and so forth.

I think there should be slider bars like in KOTOR. A Good/Evil one, a Lawful/Chaotic one and then one for each of your party members displaying your influence with them. You don't need to see exact values but you should have some idea of what you're doing.

i have a question, but i dont expect it answered... or please answer... it could be fun.
how is "im going to stay out of this" a chaotic response?

It depends on what the question was...
The abscence of Law is Chaos... so if the question was "Will you help us enforce the law" and you said "I'm going to stay out of it", it is a non-"lawful" choice.... which is Chaotic...
...or not... hehehehe...

no, im going to stay out of it is a neutral response in most situations, even if you are not upholding the law.

But as far as the game is concerned, it is black and white... and I am guessing that not being involved is somewhat of a "sin of omission" in regards to Law(Order)/Chaos, and by not agreeing to help the Law(Order) side, you are promoting Chaos.
There would be no "neutral" answer... it is either yes or no. You would obtain a neutral alignment by balancing your Law / Chaos ("yes or no") answers.
I am only guessing on how the algorithim works though... in reality, it probably really would be a neutral attitude... but to the computer program, it is a 1 or a 0...

if it where black and white, then why did they even bother with neutral?
i just think they could have thought over the dialog a little better.

Well, neutral is a result of a balance or mix of black and white...
So there are no "neutral" answers... only Law/Chaos or Good/Evil answers... if you answer lawfully too many times, you become lawful... if you answer chaotically too many times, you become chaotic.... if you answer 50/50, you are neutral.
In computer terms, say that Law is a 1, and Chaos is a 0. The ratio of the number of 1's and 0's determines your alignment.
Again, that's only what I'm guessing.... it's what happens when you combine creativity with logic... that's why I'm hesitant to try "unconventional" characters because I'm not sure how the 1's and 0's will land...

have they considered the posibility that the answer itself might be 50/50
"Again, that's only what I'm guessing.... ." keep up the good work.
IMO Planescape:Torment had the best alignment system ever. there were just so many conversation options. (plus you had the ability to lie about numerous things, of course doing that shifts you to chaotic)
I have a question: I'm a 12 Druid, and so far I've been staying mostly neutral, but I'm playing the game on good, so sometimes my responses come out lawful. Enough so that I just hit one point in lawful and it made me "lawful good". I went through and did the collectors mansion quest and got 4 points of chaotic to even it out, and I'm still considered lawful good. And I just leveled. So, either I just sit around waiting to level to 13, I go War Priest prestige, or I find a quick and easy way to get back to neutral. Anyone have any ideas?

ok, so the boarders overlap.
honestly, cheets are not the answer to anything.
outside castle nevar there is an imp, help him and you go more chaotic. i suggest you have neeska and maby quara(if you care) in your party.... and i think elenee spoke against it, so you might not want her there... or any other lawful npc's.
also be careful when you do alignment changing things.
in your chat box, it will warn you when you are about to stray from your alignment, if you need your alignment to continue in your class.

A Neutral character is either concerned with himself only or balance in general, so if you refuse to take part in something good in a time of great evil, you refuse to help restore some sort of balance or even out odds, thus you made a chaotic choice. If you are concerned with yourself only, you don't care if you live in a world that goes down the drain, thus making your choice chaotic again. Remember what it said in the Alignment descripton "A neutral Character would rather live in a good world than in a bad one." or something like that.
I can see your point though, there should be a "towards neutral script", since that whole "None of my business, why should I care"-theme does sound somewhat neutral to me.

more there should be dialog options, specificaly that one, that just dont make any change to ones alignment, as apposed to
if (good && goodEvil>=50)
ga_alignment(-1,1); // changes a good character toward nutral. variables are not correct, logic should be fine though.
and i think i had the argument about alignments somewhere else here, but a nutral character only cares that the world is good over evil because of the way it effects him. a true fence sitter wouldnt care either way, as long as it didnt affect them in a way they didnt like.
