View Full Version : Sacrifice of the Widow, Book I by Lisa Smedman
If you like FR fiction you have probably seen this on the shelf. I bought it because of the whole Annihilation/Bloviation/Condemnation six-author series, I thought Smedman was the most capable of the authors they hired. (Philip Athans being the least capable. Although it wasn't as bad as the job he did on his Baldur's Gate book.)
I'm almost through it and I think she did a good job. Pretty good plot unfolding, didn't happen too soon, lots of action. I'd give it a thumbs up. Basic summary without spoilers: the struggle between the good Drow and the varieties of bad Drow.
sounds very interesting mate.
thank you for that post, but ... there are baldur's gate book?

There were novelizations of Baldurs Gate and Baldurs Gate II. The first one was atrociously bad. Since you don’t have to eat a whole egg to know it's rotten, I avoided the second. Too bad, considering how many hours of my life I poured into those games...
ah well,
too bad then. so it's not worth spending my money on them? :(

Definatly not cal, I remember seeing it on a shelf (And since i was a big BG fan at the time i naturally took a quick glance through some of it) And from the chapter that I scanned through it seemed pretty bad.

Let's see. In what ways did Phil Athans Inflict Critical Wounds on FR fiction?
Jaheira portrayed as a whiny rag
A main character without a personality
Lots of time with Xan, arguably the least compelling party NPC in BG
Thankfully, I have blocked the rest out. It's just bad. He wrote one of the books in that series where Smedman also wrote, and he'd improved, but not that much.
While most people really like Salvatore, I think he has some fundamental stylistic flaws that detract from his great character development and storylines. But as with Star Trek, neither the reading public's nor the editors' standards are very high in FR books. Unfortunate.
I picked this up a couple of weeks ago and it's actually a continuation of the Annihilation Series. At least that's the way it's starting out. So far, it's a pretty good read. If you enjoyed the Annihilation series, definitely pick this one up. :)
Book 2, "Storm of the Dead", in the Lady Penitent series is now out in paperback. :D
