for a warlock, who can be quite a universal class, i have a problem with choosing stats. i decided on a challenge and will try to finish the game as an evil character with a drow lvl 20 (the +2 lvl adjustment will make others have enough exp to lvl to 22..... too bad they cant :( ) this means collecting all xp i can find and a lot of reloads if something goes wrong...... but back to the topic:

drow Ability Adjustments: +2 Dex, +2 Int, +2 Cha, -2 Con

32 pionts to spend can give me:
18 cha
16 dex
16 int
12 con
12 str
8 wis

now all the possible minuses: the build is not concentrated but instead gives a wide range which will not always be usefull  .

this leads me to the last  question: why do actually warlocks need that much of the charisma (especially if they want to go destructive)?
it doesnt affect their number of spells so it is not as important as int for wizards.
ok, ok this does make a tiny bit of difference in saving throws and higher lvl spells :) but i dont think going higher than 19/20 is necessary.
PS
all points will go towards charisma after that.

With a -2 to Con, having a con of 14 would take 10 pts.

A straight Warlock should focus on dex and cha. Dex allows for easier touch attacks and better AC while cha is the resistance DC on every "spell" an Warlock casts as well as modifying your own saving throws.

Personally, I would go either halfling or human. That level modifier just plays too rough for me (but that's largely a personal taste).

Either halfling or human....... i was thinking about it as well but i just thought that everyone seems to be playing human.
human is a good choice because it would make up for 2 points in inteligence and give an extra feat (combat based?).
stats for a human would therefore look like:
16 dex .... 22pts left
16 cha .... 12pts left
10 str ..... 10pts left
14 int .... 4pts left (but given a +3 to skill points anyway)
10 wis ....2pts left
10 con

halfling would be a strongheart (warlocks have high saves anyway)
16 dex .... 26pts left
16 cha .... 16pts left
10 str ..... 12pts left
10 con .... 10 pts left
And Now either: 16 intel, 8 wis or 14 intel (a +2 to skills) and 10 wis

as you can see those stats can not match the drow ones, not to mention spell & enchantment resistance, quite a few skill affinities (usesles for wlk's though).
a warlock-drow would be hard to play, but i have always though the game is a bit too easy and the hardest battles are fought in the begining. the bonus feat though is something that i would like have, but cant :)

The stats I used for my warlock are as follows:
Drow
STR : 8
DEX : 16
CON : 10
INT : 20
WIS : 10
CHA : 14

In hindsight I might sacrifice dexterity for a charisma increase but I will need to play with the stats to see what I can come up with. I started out focusing on a crafter warlock, thus the int for the high skill bonuses and checks. Strength can be fixed with items, as can wisdom (if you really wanted it) and dex can be fixed with items as well... not to mention with armor, the AC is not an issue so dex isn't that important in the long run with the exception of a to-hit roll, so, once again the argument comes full circle... I think the stats I started with are pretty standard for a good warlock build if you use Drow as the racial standard... I tried with other races and didn't find them as enjoyable as a warlock...

In my opiion you should higher your charisma a LOOOT more. It should have to be 18 AT LEAST. It are the most important stats for a warlock. Why the hell keep it low then? And it doesnt change the number of spells maybe but if arent your spells be more effective with a higher charisma? And I guess that is very important for a spellcaster.

And definitely take a drow or a gnome. A human spellcaster, that is crazy. But of course that is only my opinion ;).

Technically a Warlock is not a spellcaster. he doesn't "learn" spells, it's an innate ability. A Warlock can be any race and is really only restricted by preferences of the beginning modifier stats, IMO.

What is nice about using a human for this class and others (personal preference) is that in this game, the hostiles come right at you when you hurt them with a spell. Not having a good armor class or devastating touch spell, for in close, means you need to run away. Hence, as I posted in the thread about the palemasters, if you take a human, use that extra feat to take able learner. You can now put points into other areas without penalty, except for still keeping to half the value of your class skills. This way you can take tumble, which for me, is invaluable in being able to get away and regroup, without taking attacks of opportunity. This skill WILL save your life, if you have low AC.

My real opinion on Warlocks as a whole is that they are very one-dimensional. I was bored with my Warlock by level 8 and I have never touched that character again.
