Greetings Fellow Guild Members!!
We are very proud to present you all with a special chat session in the Rogues Roost.
Obsidian has so kindly agreed to join our chat session. This will be held at a regularly scheduled chat.
February 5th at 19:00 (7PM) EST (Eastern Standard Time - US), 00:00 (12PM) GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) (2/05/07)
This chat session will be an open discussion. The folks at Obsidian have graciously agreed to round up 6 to 8 of there staff to come join us for the full hour session. There will be no staged questions or answers.
We hope you all can come to this event and make Obsidian feel welcomed within our community
Rules
for the chat are same as the forums. I'd also like to stress this. We ask all that come to the chat to be respectful. No game bashing, flaming or rude comments.

Camping is a good excuse. We'll save a space for you just in case. :)
should we take a polll? How much of kgambit's wine will be left if any after the chat? :p I'll bring my own iced tea. Wine makes me stupid lol
Make sure one selection on the poll asks how much will be left before the chat.
" 0 "
By the time Obsidian shows up, it will be "Who the heck are you guys, and wha'dya want".

Hey, we mentioned your chat with Obisidian in episode 11 of the NWN Podcast!!

And the problem about that would be?
Btw, poor Dwight, everybody is going to drink his wine. If you come to his place you should bring something for him too. Sounds fair to me.

Somebody ask 'em when the expansion is coming out to explainn that %$^&* ending.
Sadly it doesn't require an explanation. If you played KOTOR2 you'll know why.
I've played KotOR2 though three times. That ending was even worse than NWN2's. It didn't even make that much sense.
Hmm, 7 GMT is what CDT?

You need to get out more buddy, you've been too sheltered. LOL I bet you've never been to a Toga party. I know my humor is a little off the wall, but so is Monty Python and Eddie Izzard. Both fine representitives of classic English culture. :D I have been inspired by these two giants of comedy. So if you must blame someone, blame the English and their wild and crazy sense of humor. Another thibg that I'm gonna ask them is why do you spend all game to make a weapon that is so useless that an 8year old (mine) finished the game and didn't even use it - he used a +5 Cold Iron Greasword with Cold and Rlectric damage. I couldn't even beat Light of Heavens with it.

Interesting. your bump feature does not bump, it checks the time stamp on the last post. so posting to bump, and then deleting does not bump the thread...
how then does the bumping edits via the add button work? hidden posts? extra timestamps? its interesting because editing the last post does not work...
ahh well, im ranting.

A big round of applause for Michele!
Great job. :D
Yes great job Michele!!! Everyone should appreciate what she had to go through to pull that off!! I know... try setting up interviews!!!;)
Bow before her!!!
Oh dudes, reading it after it all happened and me not being able to be there makes me cry. Glad that they answered my questions with verve! I even noticed that they were very positive to my question of interviews. Is Liso already interviewing someone? That would be just awesome.

Thanks for telling arathalion. OVerlooked the february link when waking up, but I have to admit after reading that and hearing that it was moderated with only a hand full of people allowed to talk at all I am happy that I went to bed. Also I find it a little sad there are not really many question answered. REading the log I would have loved to be there and have Liso pose one last question being "Does Atari has you people on a leash when it comes to make official statements?" I would have liked to know the answer but am sure to know the answer.
The resume sadly is that there are not many news about things to happen with our beloved game.
Its good I went to bed. Wouldn't have stayed anyways with not being alowed to speak.
btw, i dont see the point in that... why have it in irc if there is no discussion?
may as well have just emailed them a bunch questions and had them email responses...
Agreed. It was chaotic afterwards when everyone was allowed to talk... but still. I ended up playing a game and talking on MSN even after I joined. :p That and talking to Michele, Ben, and Kgambit in private chat. Being merely an observer, I might as well have waited 'til it was all over and read the log. There was no way Michele as one person could get everyone's questions in. At least she is emailing the rest... Thanks Michele! :D
Hi guys,
Just wanted to pass along our thanks for a good chat, all things considered. I know some of you were disappointed there wasn't more discussion but, seeing as how we started about 30 minutes late due to technical issues, I think it went pretty well. We just had to get back to work.
Thanks to Michele for organizing and managing everything.
Perhaps, in the future, we can do a smaller, more casual chat. Big rooms tend to be way too chaotic for a full two-way conversation.
Thanks again!

hello Rob,
thank you all again for participating in the chat.
yes, it was a bit chaotic at the beginning. I had hoped the QuakeNet IRC servers could handle us all, but I learned a lesson.
Also we want to thank the guys over at Neverwinterconnections for helping us out.

Wanted to take a moment and thank Rob, Ryan, and all the rest of the people at Obsidian. Despite our early difficulties, I felt it went very well. It's the first time we've had so many people in the chat room. It will seem empty after last night. Along with cal1s, I would really enjoy having you come back in the future.
And I wanted to give Liso, a big thank you for handling all the questiions. I know it was a lot to do.
Thanks again everybody, and looking forward to doing it again.

I guess it is my turn to comment :p
Rob, Thank so much for posting here. Also a HUGE thanks for coming to our chat session. Even with the technical issues in the beginning, I was still thrilled we managed to pull out of it some what well.
Another thanks goes out to Annie Carlson, Matt MacLean, Rob McGinnis, George Ziets, Nathaniel Chapman, Scott Everts, Charles Mead, Constant Gaw, and the imfamus Lurker Ryan Rucinski :p All for taking the time out of your busy day for all of us gamers!
Thieves guild members & Gaming community. I also want to convay a HUGE thanks to you as well. You were all very patient with me and getting your questions out. My top bar looked like a lit up Christmas tree as the name bars got so crowded, the tabs were smaller than my mouse curser! Not kidding!
Thieves guild staff. You all were so supportive of my efforts and I am honored to be a part of an amazing group of people as well as the TG community. :)
I also would like to see a less formal, less crowded chat session with Obsidian. I'll be making some more nice emails soon :)
Have a great day!!

Thanks Rob. Looking forward to seeing them. :D
Sorry for the delay in getting these answers to you. Hopefully you will find them... interesting.
Have fun! :)
1. Will there be a fan site kit anytime soon?
Rob: We have talked about that a bit here. We think it is a cool idea. Discussion continues because we just don't know yet.
2. Will there ever be the possibility to attack friendly NPCs? Since playing an evil rogue for instance doesn't make much sense currently.
Rich: I’ve added this to a list of things to look into for a future patch.
Rob: yep. Saw it there.
3. What Video Game has influenced each of your personal Style and Philosophy's of Game Design the most, and why?
Ryan: I wouldn't even know where to begin. Every game I have ever worked on or played has some kind of influence. If you play a bad game and are working on a new game, somewhere that knowledge is stored in your head saying, “Hey, ‘X’ feature really blew goats. Definitely don’t do it like that.” On the opposite end, we always review the good games and hope to walk away with a feature that was really done well.
To be more specific, all the early games I played still stick in my head the most. Check out the Atari 2600’s Supercharger games. These were tape games that could be played on the Atari 2600. “Dragonstomper” was probably the first CRPG I ever played, and I look back on it fondly. However, looking at screenshots of it now I realize how far the industry has come from those days. Also, the Paul Reiche III games (Mail Order Monsters, Archon, Star Control II, etc.) really stuck with me and I have had the pleasure of working with him on previous projects. I can honestly say he rocks!
4. What is the timeline for patch v1.05? And what are the main highlights that you're looking to implement.
Rich: The code work on 1.05 was completed a couple weeks back. The patch is just going through the QA pipeline and awaiting minor fixes/tweaks before it can be released. The multi-select support is one of the many improvements coming in 1.05.
5. Will anyone be able to post questions to the new Blog you just mentioned?
Ryan: I am unsure, to be honest. I think that there is the possibility but that isn’t my gig and I don’t think the folks working on it have made a final decision.
Rob: I believe you can post there. I see Adam Miller has something posted.
6. why was NWN2 riddled with bugs that were fixed in NWN1? Was production of NWN2 started before Bioware patched NWN1 ?
Rich: Work on NWN2 began several months before the 1.67 patch from Bioware. While we did spend time integrating some of the 1.67 changes into NWN2’s code, not every fix made it over before release. We will be working on implementing the rest of the relevant fixes in future patches for NWN2.
Ryan: I call them “Undocumented Features”. To make a long story really short, almost the entire game was written from scratch because of focus changes that happened early (and sometimes in the middle) of the project. So some fixed bugs got all kinds of broken again.
Rob: I think the work was going on before 1.66 (it's difficult to judge the time), which is why you see some bugs from that timeframe. It's very difficult to introduce some one else's code in the middle of development. So, when we had made changes to the codebase by the time Bioware released patches, adding those patches could have caused a lot more problems than they would have solved. Rich is steadily stomping those bugs that get reported, but the compatibility issues witnessed at release threw us a curve. We have had to focus a lot more on compatibility than we expected so basic bug fixes have to share effort with compatibility fixes.
7. Will any of the future patches allow for true W-A-S-D mouse look controls?
Rob: Heh. Everyone seems to have a different definition of what “true” WASD mouse controls are. What we have provided is actually pretty close to what WoW has, with the mouse buttons reversed. The problem is that there is so much stuff that has to be handled by the mouse, it’s difficult to come up with a great control scheme. Perhaps we may allow the re-binding of mouse buttons in a future patch.
8. Would you condone a homebrew alternative to a NwN2 linux server?, would you condone a homebrew alternative to a NwN2 linux server?
Ryan: Sure. Whatever it takes to get people to get to play together and enjoy the game I am fine with. To answer the second questions, Sure. Whatever it takes to get people to get to play together and enjoy the game I am fine with.
Rich: I’m pretty sure we don’t really mind what steps the community takes to solve the lack of a linux server. I can’t really speak for the company in a legal manner though.
Rob: I’ll just give my standard legal response: I am not a lawyer, so what I am going to say should not be taken as legal advice or any modification or change to the EULA that comes with NWN2. Having said that, as long as no form of income or proceeds is generated for anyone from modifying the game, or building tools to extend the capabilities of the game, I believe that there should be no legal ramifications.
9. Will there ever be an option to view who is on a multiplayer server before joining, as there was in the first NWN?
Rich: While this feature may be provided down the line, it isn’t a high priority issue for now.
10. Is there any plans for adding tooltip popups for feats and spells when creating a character? Currently there are a lot of selections which are hard to understand what exactly they do without proper documentation.
Rich: I’ve asked Finamenon for clarification as to what he was asking, since I’m not really sure. I haven’t heard back yet.
11. Plugin designers have already decoded most of TRN-fileformat, but we are stuck at walkmeshes. Is there any chance you might give us technical details on that (not now, e.g. in some dev-forum)?
Rich: Yes, additional technical documentation will be forthcoming.
Rob: Rich is currently working on some great UI documentation. Not sure what his plans are next, but you can read the UI stuff on the Obsidian Blog site.
12. Regarding the toolset: right now after each patch all the plug-ins won't work anymore. Do you have any plan to change this somehow?
Rich: Unfortunately, we don’t have a solution to this problem at this time. It is something we have been looking at, however.
Rob: This situation should improve when we slow down on patches a bit.
13. I know its too early to tell .. but are you guys already considering doing NWN3 in the future at all?"
Ryan: I couldn’t tell you if I did know. These pesky NDA’s that we have to sign keep us legally from saying anything until we get the okay from the publisher.
It really bothers me that we can’t talk about some of the things we are working on but it is the nature of the beast – We get pumped up on the titles we are working on and beg to talk about them. It makes me cry on the inside (not on the outside because I’m a real man /flex). Actually, being in Production means I am dead inside and I have to turn to vices for my emotional outlets - aka drinking alone, smoking cigarettes, and doing Brodies on people’s lawns.
Rob: I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of an expansion.
Thank you Rob, Ryan, and Rich for the answers to the left over questions. I am sure it took some time for you all to get together and answer all these. We appreciate your time and efforts.
Best Regards
Liso :)
thank you very much.
we appreciate your time you took for answering these questions.
