Hello everyone! Sorry for posting a new thread, but I haven't found one related to the rules in D&D games. I only played D&D (and AD&D) on computer (Planescape Torment was the first and best ever) so there are few things I don't know, and I thougt I ask some of you experts to help me out. I know it's a noob question but what in the Nine Hells does 'Initiative' mean? I mean how is it function? I know (maybe) that Initiative, Improved Initiative feats are important for magic users. Other than that I have no idea. I've searched all around in the net for a proper description, but nowhere I found such, not even on the official D&D site (or I'm just blind). Thanks ahead for the help!

directly from the latest players handbook:

Initiative

Every round each combatant gets to do something. The combatant's initiative checks, from highest to lowest, determines the order in which they act.

Initiative Checks:

At the start of a battle, each combatant makes an initiative check. An initiative check is a Dexterity check. Each character applies his or her Dexterity modifier to the roll. The DM (Dungeon Master) finds out what order characters are acting in, counting down from highest result to lowest, and each character acts in turn. In every round that follows, the characters act in the same order (unless a character takes an action that results in his or her initiative changing. Usually, the DM writes the names of the characters down in initiative order so that on subsequent rounds he can move quickly from one character to the next. If two or more combatants have the same initiative check result, the combatants who are tied act in order of total initiative modifier (highest first). If there is still a tie, the tied charactes should roll again to determine which one of them goes before the other.

That's it! Now I have the answers for all of my question thanks to you and to that someone who posted this =). So 'initiative' feats are not for my paladin/divine champion character in NWN2. I almost wasted a feat... a VERY BIG Thanks again Liso! Oh and the site is good, looks cool and there's a lot of useful info! Carry on!
