First, when I tried to enter the chatroom, I had to disable the popup blocker.

This still did not allow the chat to work for me.

Second, I had to remove the web address from unstrusted content. to get the ActiveX cotrolls (XP security can be troublesome)

With the chat room window open, go to

Tools
Internet Optiions
click "Content" tab
Middle of the box, Click "Certificates"
Then there will be a sideways scroll bar
Scroll over to "untrusted publlishers"
In the white box was the chat site path and it was added here. Just remove it.

To be safe, I added the site to my trusted sites
To do this, Go to
Tools
Internet Options
Security
Click on the icon "Trusted Sites"
Then add the chat room page. I also added the thieves guild in general.

Lastly, Java must be installed

Here is a direct link for Windows users. I also think I got the correct ActiveX controls from the Java download in the end.

http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Note, This is for XP usage. I do not know any instructions for other OS types or versions.

Also note, Not everyone will have the same issues if having trouble with logging onto the chat room from this site. These are problems and fixes I encountered myself.

for those not wanting to use the sites java client
irc.quakenet.org/thieves-guild.net

for help with irc

http://www.quakenet.org/
http://www.quakenet.org/faq/faq.php?c=4
http://www.quakenet.org/faq/faq.php?c=176

more help can be obtained at

irc.quakenet.org/help
but read the stuff on the site first.

recommended clients
windows, i hear mIRC is popular.
Linux, Xchat-2
mac, no idea, though you could probably get xchat working.

I believe that GAIM has ports for both windows and OSX, so you could use that, for irc and most other IM protocols. i use it for msn.

Greetings fellow theives!

I'd like to let thoughs of you know a few things about the chat room. The chatroom can be entered by our site using java or Mirc. which you can get at www.mirc.com It is a very small downlaod and really easy to use. Uusing the enterance from the thieves guild, you will need to have java installed, you can get it here. http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

The server details are shown here (http://www.thieves-guild.net/index.php?ind=news&op=news_show_single&ide=160).

When people decide to use Mirc, You are not able to see who is in the chatroom from the theives guild site. There may be others in the chat room with out even knowing it. :) So come all and see who is chattering about! We look forward to seeing you all!

let me clarify that. at the bottom of the right (atm, used to be left) bar thingy that is next to the forum itself it displays a chat section. i lists how many users are in the chat room, and who they are. it also lets you access the channel. however, this only lists the users that are accessing the channel using the thieves-guild.net java client. so if it says there are 0 users in the room, that could be incorrect, as there could be others connecting with separate clients such as Xchat, or mIRC.

For MacOS i'd say that X-Chat is the best to use, it looks/works exactly the same as the Linux/Windows version too (which is helpful since I run multiple OS's

quakenet has some rules on nicks, and i think the new client has problems with that.

try mIRC or xchat. i linked the quakenet site above, you can find the rules there

I've just added the CGI IRC client chat link (http://www.thieves-guild.net/cgi-bin/irc/irc.cgi) to the chat box, this should work behind most firewalls, proxies etc. however, some proxies it will cause username errors on! If this happens, you will have to use the Java client, or a IRC Client Application for your operating system.

NOTE:

please, if you have trouble accessing the chat room via our CGI script, try clicking on the "advanced" link in the login screen before actually entering the chat room and change the name from CGI:IRC to something else ... enter your nick above and hit enter!

cheers,
