How to get the holy avenger quest?

It has never shown up for me. Is the requirement that you must be a paladin?

To get the Holy Avenger? YES

THe quest also has an option if you are a cleric where you can get a nice weapon as well, and there is a third option called the Atonement Quest that allows an evil character to atone for past deeds and get a 70 shift in alignment from evil to good.

Those are the ONLY three options.

I never heard of this quest...it sounds perfect for my paladin.

Okay, semi-short version:

In act 3, before you travel to the Ironfist Stronghold build the church of Tyr.
Enter the church, talk to Ivarr. He'll give you the quest ....

Then go to Ironfist Stronghold and kick off the Dwarven quests
Travel to Mt G, and follow the path up to the Teetering Boulder on the way to Big T's lair

Once you are slightly past the Boulder but not quite to the entrance to Big T's lair, a cut scene should fire OOOOOO A holy light shines down from the heavens! Big JUJU here Mahn!

Then go to Big T's Lair, off the scaly wanker, and approach his treasure trove ...

OOOOO another light from heaven! and POOF! A new treasure chest gets added - just at the edge of the trove IIRC.

Open the chest and pull out the smokin' HA! And let your paladin rejoice for he is indeed the holiest of warriors and carries the might of his god. And yea verily he shall go forth and smite evil throughout the land! (Until he meets a bigger badder dude than him ... )
