Hello

I made a new character (an Aasimar this time) and I wonder, do you get more XP if you play solo or with less companions? I'd like to have level 20 when I fight the king of shadows.

I'm not entirely certain but I believe my Aasimar paladin was level 20 when I fought the KoS. You need to do virtually every quest to get there though.

I'll double check my imported character and let you know for sure. :D

Edit: She was JUST short of level 20 after she finished killing the 3 reavers:

She had 208880 XP with 210000 XP needed for 20th level. She was 20th level on import to MotB.

My human and wood elf reached level 20 just before the final battle and they did almost every quest in the game so I assume that you would need some tricks to reach level 20 with a character that has a level adjustment penalty.

I didn't farm xp nor did I leave my character unleveled to gain extra xp. I just did every conceivable quest that I could. :D I was just short of level 20 upon entering the inner sanctum (see xp levels above).

thank you

I found the answer here:

* While Obsidian has stated that NPC's, summons, familiars, and animal companions do not affect earned Experience Points, this is not entirely true. Summons, familiars, and animal companions are not counted in the calculation for earned Experience. However, the party's average character level (not ECL) is used to determine earned Experience for an encounter. This has a profound impact on high ECL races as they will cause the party to earn accelerated experience points during play because they bring the party average level down.

* Example 1: A Human Wizard of 7th level is adventuring with Khelgar Ironfist (only) and encounters a Bladeling. The Bladeling has a Challenge Rating (CR) of 1. The party's average level is 7. This happens because NPC's have the same XP's as the PC, thus making Khelghar (a Dwarf Fighter) also level 7. The earned experience for this encounter is 17 points for every character in the party regardless of their condition upon earning the points (i.e., dead or alive).

* Example 2: If the same Wizard above had Neeshka instead of Khelgar Ironfist, she'd be a level 6 Rogue (because she's a Tiefling and thus has an ECL of +1). The average party level is thus 6.5 which is rounded down to 6. This results in 19 points of experience for every character in the party for the encounter.

So because you're an Aasimar, you gain more XP than a human with the same total XP. Cool :)

I seem to remember that Neeshka gets more XP for killing enemies, but I'd have to double-check that. ;)

And she's a lot of fun to have in the party. :D
