View Full Version : Problem with Norton AV?
I look at this site from time to time, and there is a lot of very nice content. :)
My problem is, that I can't acces this site from home, but only from work :p
The site stops loading when it gets to the paypal or ad element. I suspect it is protecting me from something, but I don't know what.
Since I can't be the only one with Norton 2007 on these boards I'd like to know if anyone can help me deal with it (assuming it is a Norton problem at all). The one thing I won't do is turn off Norton before going on the iste.
I'm runing IE7 at home but that shouldn't be a problem - right?
First of all, I'm not using Norton myself, but my best guess is that Norton perceives the paypal icon and link to be potentially harmful and then hangs up the loading of the page. It would not be the AV component doing this though, but some other Norton module, like antiphishing.
It could also be that the antiphishing of IE7 does this, though I kind of doubt that. IE7 loads fine for me even when I change security settings from medium to high.
I would look through Norton's settings, may be there is something there to put this site to trusted sites.
I feel for you Magraev, in my opinion Norton AV is a virus. Have you tried McAfee? I seem to have eliminated many of my connection problems by switching.
That's a bit harsh. The only thing I don't like about Norton is that it seems to be heavy on the OS. Personally, I use and can recommend AVG, but that's not the point here. The point is to help Magraev to narrow down the problem and find a solution. If he is otherwise a happy Norton customer, it would be a shame to try to sway him over to any other company.
Understood,
I was not attempting to sway Magraev toward what I use. I was merely stating my opinion, and sharing what I did to solve similar problems I had with Norton. I used Norton for about a year, until my frustration moved me to find something else.
Magraev, no offense was meant. :D
No problem. I've heard Norton critizised many times, so I'm used to it.
I've considered switching several times, but this site is really the only I have problems with (I don't surf so much, so maybe that's why).
I'll try Epirotes idea about adding thieves-guild.net to trusted sites - thanks for the help. I'll let you know if it works (tonight if it works, tomorrow if it doesn't...).
Well I couldn't get it to work last night (didn't spend too long trying either). It locks when it comes to the paypal icon.
I'm considering dl'ing firefox and trying with that.
I'm running IE7 with AVAST, and not having this problem either. I suspect it's a Norton issue, since that appears to be the one difference between you, me, Epirote and sirchet. Aside from Epirote's suggestion of adding TG as a trusted site I'm not coversant enough with NortonAV to suggest another solution.
First time we've heard of this problem Magraev. Sorry for the problem. I hope the switch to Firefox works for you. :D
Well I dl'd Firefox and it worked. I can now look at the page from the comfort of my own home
I still have my trusty Norton anti-phishing toolbar though... And there is still something about that paypal that causes the load of the page to stop - firefox just doesn't crash because of it.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
Glad that you got it resolved. :D

Same here, let us know how well Firefox works, I'm always looking for better AV.
Goes to show you once more that firefox is a superior browser ... :D:D
For better AV try AVG 8.0. :wtf::D

Heh. My vote was on a Norton issue.
All hail Trend.

The only negative I have seen with AVG is an occassional false virus report by AVG. It's a false positive that is solved by simply updating AVG and their virus data base. Not all AVG users have seen this btw. :D It's cropped up occassionally in the Self Help Tech forums on the Bioware forums site.
I run AVAST and haven't had any problems.
To be fair many AVs do that; others more, others less. What I like about AVG is, it's light on the OS. :) I also think that may be potentially unwanted programm messages are sometimes confused as false positives ... whereas this feature is working as intended.:wtf::vine::D
