View Full Version : Captured Spell Books
I had the pleasure recently to exchange some ideas with an extremely talented scriptor by the name of Lance Botelle.
Lance's Latest project is to construct a usable Captured Spell Book which allows mages to scribe spells from the book into their own known spell lists.
Check out the details on Lance's blog (http://worldofalthea.blogspot.co m/2008/04/captured-spell-books.html). Lance describes the captured spell book project far better than I can. :D
Check out Lance Botelle's Readable Book (http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=NWN2UI.Deta il&id=99) project on the vault as well.

That's what was missing in the game.
Currently, the only way for Wizards to change their known spells is to level up. There should have been a way for Wizards to learn new spells from books, and place a limit on the number of spells you know per level based on Intelligence.
Well, that's kinda like 1st edition AD&D....
them were the glorious days of AD&D ... :D alas, they are lost in the past, though I will always fondly remember them. :D

Can't you still scribe a scroll into your spellbook if you have a high enough spellcraft score? Now that I think about it, I'm sure I've learned a spell from a scroll. :D
btw...I see I'm an epic level character now, (level 20) WooHoo!! I choose "Perfect Two Weapon Fighting" for my epic feat. :D :D

The way Lance's book functions is as follows:
You select a spell from the book to scribe and a scroll of that spell is placed in your inventory and simultaneously removed from the spell list in the book. THen you can sell the scroll, cast a spell from the scroll or use the SCROLL to learn the spell. :D
It's like finding a mage's spellbook like we used to in PnP. :D

Congratulations! :D Unfortunately, I don't think Epic levels are implemented yet here.:wtf: :D
And to add to kgambit's answer to your question: not only pnp, I have seen this in other games as well ... I think. Don't ask which ones, can't remember, 'cause that was ages ago. :D

LOL
Epic levels start at level 21. 20th level warrior isn't Epic.
The amazing thing about Lance's latest project is that he basically did all of this in about 2 days! It's not quite finished yet, but still .........
Lance has finished the project and has now posted it for download at the Vault. We'll be adding it for download on the TG site along with several other goodies in the next few days. :D

Very similar to how it works in 3.5, except that the spell only disapears from the book if you read it like a scroll (i think) Wiz's are allowed to copy(or more often trade) spells from other Wiz books. So if you kill an enemy wizard (or other book user, like the "Wu-jen", don't ask!) the wizard/other in the party could scrawl out any spells they din't have, then the party could sell the intact book for n funds!
Lance deliberately limited the spells to ONE use to avoid having the books become overpowered. Imagine a full book passed from wizard to wizard to wizard. It would seriously cheapen the value of any such book. :D

Indeed. Its one of the reasons I prefer socerers in PnP. Much higer premium on spell knowledge, even if you DO spend every available feat on learning new ones!
