Was wondering what other games you folks are playing out there in videoland. I know I have a few on my PC that I like to get into.

Elderscrolls IV, w/mods, expansions.

Fear, First Encounter.

NWN1, w/expansions.

Baldurs Gate I.

And I might pick up Supreme Commander. Mainly because the price at Wal-Mart has gone down from $59 to $29.

cal1s

no, gothic is a singleplayer roleplaying game from germany :)
it's quite good, although part 3 has more bugs then any other game out there :)

oh and lurchy, you're playing BG1? sweet :) .. i was thinkin about installing and playing the series again, too :)

i subscribed to lords of the rings online some months ago and playing that game from time to time ... its cool.

I really like BG1. Played it so many times, I had to buy a new set of CD's. LOL
How is that LotR? Wouldn,'t mind trying it, if I could try it for a bit without having to sign up.

cal1s

personally i think lotro is one of the best games ever, because i just love tolkien ...
and you can try it for 7 days for free ... i immediately singed a lifetime account because i know i will be playing this game as long as it is out there :)

the very brilliant thing about the game is, it's really 1:1 designed by the lotr books ... if you know the books you will be surprised that they even put in the very smallest details in the game from the books ...

i recommend trying it out ....

LOL I've got Abe's Oddysee on the old PC I have set up for old games. Still play it once in a while. Witcher looks interesting. Let me know what it's like, if anybody gets it. I'm tired of war games for a while, and FPS's. Just got through playing FEAR a whole bunch of times. Definately is a cool game though. I don't know, can't make up my mind on what I want to try next. About the Witcher:

I had it installed before my Ubuntu disaster, tried to play it, but it was very laggy and in the end it had a very nasty BSOD. Will try it out as soon as my new graphic card arrives. :santa:

Yes, we are slaves to the machine. The game companies could help though. Most PC's coming out now have multiple core CPU's. But the game companys aren't taking advantage of them. I have that problem with NWN2, and the fact I use the new SLI technology. Which it also doesn't support. NWN2 has a start option for AMD's dual core, but it's just a fix to make it work with one of the cores. But I also have a problem with the game crashing, if it sits idle for more than a few minutes. I found out, after much research, it's because of the fact I used 2 video cards linked together.
Has anybody heard if Halo 3, is going to be a Vista only game like Halo 2 was. It probably will be, since Microsoft refuses to let WinXP upgrade to DX10.

Epirote
12.15.07, 14:12
Who can blame them. Give it a couple of years and XP will be an obsolete system, like Windows 95 is now.

And as for gaming and costs involved, I did certain calculations and I ruled out from the beginning that every PC overhaul upgrade can't cost more than 1500-2000 euros.

Incidentally, does any one know if there is a Linux version of NWN2?

What was your old video card?

The scoop on the Witcher (from everything i've read) is as follows:

1) load times are dreadful
2) very graphic intensive so a run of the mill / old video card won't cut it
3) lots and lots of little bugs (and some NOT so little ones as well) - 1st patch is a whopping 116 MB which is the size of the first 4 NWN2 patches combined
4) translations/dialogs for the US version are reportedly less than stellar

First patch is supoosed to clear up a LOT of issues though

Eschalon Book 1 is a great game put together by a very small company. It's simplistic yet very appealing, and addicting. You can try it out for free. It's a single player rpg with a lot of old school charm.

I too revisit Baldur's Gate from time to time, man I love that game.

Really? I found exactly the opposite. Witcher load times were longer than NWN2/MotB - at least on my system. Not terrible but definitely slower. Slow enough to be annoying at any rate. My neighbor thinks so as well. In fairness, you ARE only playing the demo and not the full game. :D

I really liked Diablo, DII w/expansion, Sacred, and a game that I originally played on the Nintendo system called Wizardry which is out for the pc but hard to find. I also like Chuzzle, Bejeweled, 7 Wonders of the Ancient World, most Mah Jong games, and a few other downloadable games. Also like most sim-Lost Wages (Los Vegas) games where you have to build your casinos. I am partial to RPGs, and rather picky about the games I choose. :santa:

I never got into Diablo, though I tried, but I played Sacred quite a lot. And I thought of some others too: Divine Divinity 1-2, Atlantis 1-3, Syberia 1-2, Alpha Centauri, Dungeon Siege.

And on the topic of loading times: if you can stand Gothic 3 loading times, the Witcher's will be tolerable. And now that I have my new graphics card installed, I'll try it out. :santa:

You played Alpha Centauri. Did you play the expansion, Alien Crossfire? I really got into that game. Played Dungeon Siege I and II, Sacred, Divine Divinity, a little. And I played Siberia I only. Games I like, Doom I, II, and 95", not III, Half Life I and II, Age of Empires, I and II, but not III. Loved Morrowind, played that to death. Did a lot of modding for it too. Don't like Oblivion as much. X-Com: UFO defence, Stonekeep, Daggerfall.

Well, my question as to what I'll be playing next was answered. I got Call of Duty 4 for Christmas, and I downloaded the demo for Witcher. And I like both games. So far the story in Witcher is good and it's got me interested in playing more. Call of Duty is very intense, which I also like at times. A real white knuckle ride. Both games have great graphics, but of course, vastly different concepts. Of course, that new action pack for NWN2, Mysteries of Westgate, will be out soon. So it looks like I'll have my hands full for quite a while. LOL

I am also replaying the Xenosaga games on my PS3 whenever I'm at my grandmothers. By the way has anyone played Oddworld - Munche's Oddysee before? I bought it recently, however the backwards compatibility for the 360 sucks... because voices in-game are not audible, you only hear a faint voice FAR off in the distance. We -there is no we- are all lurking around. :D Wasn't that Oddworld Abe's Odyssey? Great game anyway. On a side note backward compatibility rarely works in my experience, I have a lot of Windows 95/98 games, that I would like to play from time to time, but it just does not work under windows xp.

Just finished Gothic 3 for the second time. Well, first time after graphics card and monitor upgrade. If anyone thinks NWN2 is bug ridden, hey, go play Gothic 3 and may be you will reconsider. At least NWN2 crashes rarely, and then usually it goes straight to desktop. Also, if anyone thinks MotB was not Epic enoug or too much montyhaul or too easy even on insanely hard difficulty, go play Gothic 3 and watch your toon die repeatedly even on easy wimp mode.

Nevertheless, a grate game Gothic, the whole series actually, it's one of my favourites, but to play it smoothly you propably need a top notch gaming rig and even then some bugs will just kill all the fun.

I'll start my second run through MotB next I guess, and then I'll give The Witcher a try, though I think it will not run too well on my machine. Need at least another gig of ram. Oh well ....

No, but that's not the point ... my point was that backwards compatibility, although heavily advertised, just doesn't seem to work as advertised ...

I was thinking about recycling some old hardware laying around and building a Windows 98 machine for that .... ;) Although, some simulator or emulator would be probably the easiest solution, but I always wanted to build a machine from scratch all by myself. ;)

arathalion
01.21.08, 21:46
ill stop. i honestly dont see how vista could be fast (preloading doesnt make it fast, just moves load times and slows down the rest of the system) but then i think ive made my opinion known already so i should shut up.

cal1s
01.21.08, 22:11
well you could tell why you dont like vista ... what makes you think vista is worse than xp?

arathalion
01.21.08, 22:32
oh, im sure ive stated it before in one of the multipul threads around. i just realised that there wasnt much use in questioning it.

but anyway if you ask, i dont like xp to begin with, but as to why vista is worse than xp?

well, just to go through what you said you liked about it to begin with; fast? how so?
if you are talking about preloading then all it does is load every program it can on start up, taking a million years to turn on when you probably wont use half of them anyway to give the semblance of speed, when in actuality all it does is decrease the effectiveness of your system by taking up a rather large amount of ram which is in no way a good idea.

its got that whole dx desktop thing and uses half your system for the desktop then doesn't disable itself when switching off it to a second DX window, thus decreasing the performance of your system further.

there is the above issue with backwards combatablity and microsofts lacking in the ability to fathom the concept. the reason i have windows installed is cause there are some things that dont work in linux, and when they dont work in vista, and then run badly (when they do run) doesnt endear me to the system.

im a 3d artist, i use every inch of my hardware to do some things. i would like it vista wasnt using it.

another thing is microsfts want to make it more "user friendly". their idea of user friendly is (and has always been) make a big button that does almost nothing or changes too much and make it harder to get to the real controls. itt make it easer to get to the raw commands. if they just made 9x more stable and left the interface i would be happy with it.

oh, and vista's security is a joke. i think thats the one ive gone on about a bit around here. their security either sucks and doesnt do anything but add more mouse clicks to do something (which means you get rsi faster, not to mention irritated by being asked the same question over and over.) or its over paranoid and brakes at the slightest thing. i think i posted a link to a review of its security in a couple of places.

i could probably go on.

cal1s
01.22.08, 00:25
well i see your points there ...
and this shall not end in a windows vs linux fight but i personally believe linux is at least as unsecure as windows is ... the reason people tend to pick on windows is that it's being used by most people around the world and therefore its natural that security issues are being found more often and more faster than on any other OS ... but i dont believe that linux is more secure than windows ...

i also had linux installed .. and believe it or not ... i tried for 3 damn months to get my nvidia drivers to work back in 2002 ... and let me tell you that im no DAU .. im 30 now and have been using computers since im 8 .. i know my way around damn well when it comes down to computers and even know unix/linux ... (as well as scripting in unix shell) ... but those f*** nvidia drivers just didnt want to be set up ... even a very skilled linux nerd couldnt help me with that .. so i get rid of that system ... in windows i just need to execute the .exe and done ...

as for windows being fast ... as i said i am running it for more than a year now and really .. i have not experienced the slightest problem so far .. not the slightest ... i have decent hardware and choose my drivers carefully .. also i choose the programs carefully i install .. my system, registry, drivers, directories etc etc .. everything is being maintained carefully and clearly ... my system is tidy to every bit ... and i believe thats one big reason why my system runs very well .. and always did .. wether it be win95, 98, 2k or xp ... im quite paranoid when it comes down to operating systems and always try to be very picky about drivers and overall system maintenance ...

im not saying windows is better ... im saying windows is a very capable operating system when you know how to deal with it ... both, linux and windows has its benefits ...

and i did compare both systems ... xp and vista and i must say i'd always prefer vista over xp because i have the impression and i believe vista is much more reliable .... under xp i had bluescreens from time to time ... under vista, although people like to say the drivers arent still fully developed, i had no single bluescreen or similiar crashes ...

so bashing microsoft has become trendy and i dont like that ...
yes, i also dont agree with their license politics but thats another story
their software has always been great ...
there is no software with millions and millions of lines of code which has no bugs ... there is no such software ...

also, what a lot of people like to forget and even dont think about is the fact that, when windows crashes .. programs refuse to work, hardware refuse to work as they are supposed to .. most of the time its not even windows' fault .. its wether the user's or ... the third party drivers ... windows has nothing to do with that ... but people always scream "damn windows" ... :)

its like driving on a highway with your mercedes and suddenly your inbuilt MP3 player from panasonic breakes down and you yell at mercedes for that ...

nuff said :)

sorry, i didnt mean to make a comparison between windows and linux.

was that back when you had to compile separate kernel and glx drivers? i think i had a couple of issues back when i first tried that... or was it that i forgot to make modules install when i compiled the kernel.

the problem with linux is the amount of fiddling you have to do to make it work. these days you can get a run file that is supposed to do it for you, but as the kernel isnt set in stone like the windows one you can still come across issues.

and yeah, the fact that you actually have to have decent hardware to run vista? um what? im not to keen on that. i quite like keeping my older systems running.

oh, i dont like microsoft for other reasons. dont really care that everyone else is bashing them though. there licensing crap and their customer support being at the for front issues.

your security issues with linux?

the most notable one is that no one tries to break linux. no viruses etc. so an unprotected system is still more safe than windows.
i wont argue further cause i dont know enough about vista secutiry to compare it with linux.

to be fair, i dont have many problems with windows (in an while im running it sense), and a few that i do have are caused by my not liking the way it does some things. sure, ill curse at it and all, but i can recognise that really i just dont like a difference in the way its running.

Ubuntu rocks! :D Far superior to MS XP which I am familiar with. Why? Because it installs smooth and recognizes all hardware without any manufacturer drivers. As a result I can immediately go on line and surf around. On my other partition I have freshly installed XP, but because my network adapters are not recognized and I don't have a manufacturer's drivers CD I can't.

About Vista: I had a chance to try it out while borrowing a laptop, when my monitor died and I was waiting for a new one, and I am not one bit impressed. I've seen a lot of eye-candy improvements, but I don't care about those. One thing that really got me pissed off though was the constant confirmations windows. Like, vastly exaggerated: Are you really, really, really sure you want to perform this action? Are you really the administrator? huh? Hey, I'm logged in as the administrator, who did you expect I was?

If, I could play my favourite games on Ubuntu, I would ditch XP asap.

It's not my computer, it belongs to the college. No way would you ever catch me owning a Mac!!! Especially seeing as I use my comp mostly for gaming.

I'd actually rather have a Mac. If you know how to use all the apps, the Mac rocks. And with boot camp, I could switch to XP and play NWN2 or Oblivion or whatever game I'm working on (I don't know how well Parallels works when it comes to gaming).

But cost is a big factor, and I can't justify buying a Mac when I have three working PC's in the house. And I can at least fix the PC's and easily replace or add parts. Upgrading my system would probably cost less than $500, since all I'd have to do is buy a motherboard, processor, and a graphics card. Well, it would depend.. I might actually need to buy RAM too, and I might need a faster hard drive if it's SATA.

But given the choice, I really would go with a Mac. I can use both XP and OSX platforms equally well, and I do prefer the Mac OS over XP. (I have considered buying a Mac mini, but...)

Having said that, the game I'm currently playing other than MotB is Gorillas Deluxe...

I've been working with them for 5 months and I just cannot stand the interface... I'm much happier with PC, but I guess that is just me... Bah, oh well, I just wish our college would stay away from Macs. :( Btw what is the equivilant for ctrl-alt-delete for Mac? I've encountered I few times task manager would have been convenient to have.

I've been playing Civ IV: Beyond the Sword... but after a few marathon - paced games, I am left bored. Lol. It leaves me wanting even more to research and more advanced units to produce. I like the Afterworld scenario, though. The turn-based gameplay with just a few units is kinda like in X-Com and the UFO games.

Closest thing is "Activity Monitor" which is in the Utilities folder. I've never really had a need for it, but it does about the same thing as the Task Manager.

Hey, has anyone played this game called "Universal Combat"? It's a Sci-Fi genre game which features both space combat (fighter and capital ship) and ground combat (like a first person shooter). Or at least that's what it looks like...

Start getting some of the mods for the game, which inhance it. Some of them are nearly as good as the expansions.

Eh, knowing me, each mode will keep me entertained for 2 games max... Btw are there any mods to fix a few small, insignifigant things that I miss from CIV III? For example : I liked building my own palace. :p Lol. I also liked the little faces and when you go over them it tells you their ancestory... Like you could put a spanish worker in an american city, then one of then a portion of the civilians would be spanish. As, I said... very insignifigant, but neat stuff. I love Civ IV alot more of course, but just pointing out things I miss. One thing I will always hate about Civ games though is how stuff is so friggin' random. I had a Mechanized Infantry lose 3/4 of it's strength to a single Longbowman. Where is the logic in that?!?!

You may want dales combat mod, it is a revised combat system, only problem is that it isn't out yet, but it should be coming out in the next few days. You should also get Fall from Heaven, the #1 mod for civ, it totally changes the game into playing in a world of magic.

The only site which really has mods is Civfanatics.

I picked up 'The Witcher' yesterday, by pure coincidence. I must say I'm rather addicted to it now. I was somewhat doubtful over the new combat system, but it hasn't got me bored once yet. The world itself is quite low-magic and pretty dark, but up until now I've got to say it is 'teh awesome'.
